HISTORY OF THE POMERANIAN

Pomeranians originated from Pomerania, Germany

which is located in the northern part of Germany

on the Pomeranian Bay.

They were originally called Northern Group Type Dogs,

or Spitz Type Dogs,

whichever classification you prefer.

This group of dogs is quite old.

They have been found on vases and other pieces,

dating back to 400 bc.

The smaller varieties were favorite pets of royalty and wealthy ladies.

The larger sturdier dog was used to haul goods,

a watchdog, and a guardian of flock.

It is the smaller present day Pomeranian

that was

gradually accepted by the well-to-do

and nobility of Europe.

The one person which has often been given credit

for downsizing the dog is

Great Britain's Queen Victoria.

She cherished all animals,

but the Spitz Type Dogs

was considered her closest friends.

They were often found running loose in the court &

her interest in Poms excited the populace.

The country was eager to except her latest specimen,

the Pomeranian.

Her Majesty had a large collection of the breed.

From the largest to smallest

were a variety of colors;

white, black, brown, blue

and a mixture of these

colors as well.

The breed was entered in an English dog show

for the first time in 1905.

There were 125 shown at this single event.

The breed has made drastic changes since this era.

Through exceptional breeding,

it has gone from a rather large dog

(30 to 60 pounds)

to the dog we know today.

This cheerful little dog is an extremely popular breed in Europe,

where it is referred to as Loup-Loup.

It has become extremely poplar in the United States

and Canada as well.

"The New Pomeranian"
